Beach · Walk south at low tide towards Banna
A Blue Flag beach on the north shore of Tralee Bay: three kilometres of sand under Kerry Head, free parking by the village and lifeguards in summer.
Ballyheigue Beach runs south from the village along the north shore of Tralee Bay, three kilometres of open sand that joins the longer run of beach and dunes down to Banna Strand. Kerry Head closes the view to the north and the Dingle Peninsula, with Mount Brandon, sits across the bay to the south.
The beach holds the Blue Flag for 2026 from An Taisce, with lifeguards on duty in the bathing season from June to mid September. Check the notice board at the beach for the hours. Parking at the village end is free, and the village has shops, pubs and a playground a short walk from the sand.
The water is good for swimming on a calm day and the beach picks up surf when the swell runs. Walk south along the sand to the outlet from Lough Akeragh and the dunes of the Akeragh, Banna and Barrow Special Area of Conservation, and give the birds room there in winter.
From our home at Fenit it is under half an hour by car around the bay through Ardfert, and about half an hour from Listowel. The ruin of Ballyheigue Castle, a Gothic Revival house from 1809, stands above the village, and the Kerry Head loop road beyond it is a short scenic drive with cliffs and views back over the bay.
