Derrymore Strand

Beach · Bring binoculars for the shore birds

A sandy beach on Tralee Bay under the Slieve Mish Mountains, five minutes by car from our Camp cottages.

Derrymore Strand is a sandy beach on the south shore of Tralee Bay, between Tralee and Camp, with the Slieve Mish Mountains rising straight behind it. The name comes from the Irish doire mór, the great oak grove.

It is the nearest beach to our Camp cottages, about five minutes by car, and a little over ten from our homes at Aughacasla. There is a public car park at the beach.

Next to the strand, Derrymore Island is a nature reserve, known for its rare plant communities and as a place where shore birds gather at high tide, so bring binoculars and give the birds room.

The beach is popular with local people in summer and quiet for most of the year. Check the tide before you set out, as the width of the sand changes with it. Camp village is a few minutes back along the road for coffee or a pub.
