Most people looking at holiday homes in Castlegregory are weighing the same things: how far is the beach, is there room for everyone, can the dog come, and what does a week actually cost. Woodside House at Aughacasla is the one we point to when someone asks what self catering in Castlegregory looks like in practice. New photographs of the house went up this month. Here is the house room by room, with the detail you need to decide.
Where the house sits
Woodside is at Aughacasla, on the north shore of the Dingle Peninsula between Tralee and Castlegregory village. The Atlantic is in front of you and the Slieve Mish mountains behind. The house stands on its own with a private drive and lawns on both sides. You see the sea from the bay window of the living room, from the dining room patio doors and over the sink in the kitchen.
The nearest sand is Aughacasla Bay Beach, about eighteen minutes on foot along a quiet road, and flat enough for a buggy or bikes. Castlegregory village with the Spar, Boland's bar and Blow-In Coffee is about six minutes by car. Brandon Bay and the surf and kitesurf schools of the Maharees are around seventeen minutes, Castlegregory Golf Links eleven. Glanteenassig Forest Park, with its lakes, river walks and waterfalls, is a few minutes inland by car. Tralee is twenty two minutes, Dingle town about thirty six, and Kerry Airport under forty.
Room for eight
Four bedrooms sleep eight. The beds are all different, which helps when two families share and someone has to remember which room is theirs: one has a cream frame beside a sunlit window, one a pine headboard, one a decorative metal headboard, one a dark wooden bed with a teal throw. One bedroom has an en-suite with an electric shower behind a glass screen. There is a second full bathroom with a bath, and a guest toilet downstairs, so eight people are not waiting for one door in the morning.
Downstairs the living room has leather sofas, a cast-iron fireplace with a pine surround and a wall-mounted television, with wooden glazed doors through to the dining room. The dining table seats the whole party in front of patio doors onto the lawn. The kitchen has pine cabinets, an electric cooker and microwave and a window to the sea; the washing machine is in the laundry room. Fast Wi-Fi runs through the house, parking is free on the drive, and bed linen and towels are included.
Dogs
Woodside takes dogs, up to two, with a pet fee of 100 euro per dog for the stay. Add the dog when you pick your dates and the fee shows in the total before you pay. The lawns are large, the beach is a walk away and the Glanteenassig trails are a short drive. What a week looks like
Check-in is from 4pm with a lockbox at the door, so a late arrival from the airport is no trouble, and check-out is by 10am. Most guests spend mornings on Aughacasla or Castlegregory Beach and drive out to the Maharees in the afternoon to watch the kitesurfers or take a lesson. Horse riding on Brandon Bay and a round at the golf links are nearby. Dingle is a day out over the Conor Pass. In summer there is music in the village pubs, and the Blow-In does coffee on the way to the beach.
