Castlegregory is the main village on the north side of the Dingle Peninsula, about halfway between Tralee and Dingle. It takes its name from a castle built here by Gregory Hoare in the 16th century.
About 370 people live in the village, and in summer it is the base for the beaches and water sports of the Maharees, the sandy spit that begins at its edge. Brandon Bay lies to the west and Tralee Bay to the east, with Beenoskee and Stradbally Mountain rising directly behind.
The main street has pubs with trad music through the summer, a shop, takeaways and the Blow-In Café, a local favourite for coffee and brunch. The beach on Tralee Bay is about a twelve minute walk from the centre. Just west of the village, Lough Gill is a shallow lake with a nine hole links golf course on its shore.
Until 1939 a branch of the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway carried passengers here from the junction near Camp. The big local date is Pattern Day on 15 August, traditionally marked with mutton pies and now a three day summer festival.
For our guests it is the place for a relaxed evening: a pint, something to eat and a walk on the sand before dark.
