A forest park with two lakes, a waterfall and three short trails in the Slieve Mish mountains, a short drive above our Aughacasla and Castlegregory homes.
Glanteenassig is a sheltered valley in the Slieve Mish mountains, turned off the main road at Aughacasla and followed up past the farms until the forest closes in. Coillte looks after it as a forest park of more than 450 hectares of woodland, lake, mountain and bog.
The road ends at two lakes. Lough Slat is the first, with a level path of about 300 metres to the water and the crag above it called Carrignaspaniagh, the Spaniards Rock. Lough Caum sits deeper in the valley with a bog bridge loop of about 2 km around it, an hour at an easy pace, with Stradbally Mountain and Beenoskee above. The River Trail is the gentlest, 1.1 km beside the stream that feeds Lough Slat, with picnic tables along the way.
There are car parks at both lakes and a picnic site, and nothing else: no shop, no café, no toilets. Bring what you need. The park is open from 8am, closing at 10pm in summer and 6pm in winter. Fishing on the lakes needs a permit; ask locally before you cast.
From our homes at Aughacasla the turn is a few minutes along the road towards Camp, then a slow climb up the valley: about twenty minutes door to door, and much the same from Castlegregory village. On a wet day the waterfall is at its best, and on a still evening the lakes mirror the hills. It is the place we send guests who want a walk that is not a beach.
