Holiday homes in Cloghane

Mount Brandon, the highest Irish peak outside the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, starts ten minutes from the door, and the pilgrim path up from Faha is one of the great Kerry walks. Fermoyle Strand runs for miles below the village, and the Conor Pass drive into Dingle is twenty minutes away.

Cloghane, Co. Kerry: where it is

Cloghane (An Clochán) is on the north side of the Dingle Peninsula, on the western shore of Brandon Bay, 19 minutes by car from Castlegregory and about 40 from Tralee. Dingle town is 25 to 30 minutes away over the Conor Pass, the highest mountain road in Ireland, or about 55 minutes by the main road round through Annascaul. It is a Gaeltacht village, so the signs are in Irish and you will hear it spoken in the pub.

Walking from the door

The Faha trailhead for Mount Brandon is six minutes from the village by car. Allow four to five hours for the climb and save it for a clear day. Fermoyle Strand is three minutes away: a small free car park, an hour’s loop round the headland, and miles of sand along Brandon Bay when the tide is out. The Dingle Way passes through the village, and the stage over the shoulder of Brandon to Ballydavid is the hardest day on the whole route. Pedlar’s Lake is a ten minute scramble from the car park near the top of the Conor Pass, 17 minutes away.

Evenings in the village

O’Connor’s bar is the heart of Cloghane village: a turf fire, seafood, music some nights, and tables outside when the sun is on the street. Siopa an Phobail, the community shop, covers the basics; the big shop is in Castlegregory or Tralee. In late July the Pattern Festival fills the street with music and racing, and in Brandon, five minutes along the bay, there is a second pub and the pier.

Getting to Cloghane
