Where is Fenit beach?
Fenit sits twelve kilometres west of Tralee in County Kerry, where the town road runs out and Tralee Bay opens up. The beach is a Blue Flag strand with the harbour wall at one end and Little Samphire Island, the white lighthouse on its own rock, out in the water. It is a short beach by Kerry standards, which is exactly why it works for an hour before dinner: you park, you walk the sand, you look across at the Slieve Mish mountains, and you are back at the house before the rain arrives.
The walk: harbour wall, lighthouse view and the Greenway
Walk east from the car park and the sand gives way to rock pools and seaweed, with the pier and the working boats behind you. Walk west and you pick up the coast path towards the lighthouse viewpoint, where a bench and a picnic table look straight out at Little Samphire. If you are looking for things to do in Fenit that cost nothing, this is the first of them. The Tralee to Fenit Greenway starts at the same car park, thirteen and a half kilometres of flat traffic free path along the old railway line, so a walk on the beach turns into a cycle into town if the weather holds.
Sea sauna at Fenit: what to know before you book
A few minutes from the sand, Fenit Lighthouse Sauna runs a wood fired barrel sauna with a view over the bay. It is one of a handful of sea saunas now working along the County Kerry coast, and the only one in the village. Sessions are thirty minutes or an hour, booked online, with social sessions you join and private slots for a group. There is a cold shower on site, open changing areas and somewhere to leave your clothes, and most people walk down for a dip in the sea between rounds. Bring a small towel and water in a non metal bottle, wear swimwear or loose clothing, and arrive five minutes early because a late arrival simply shortens the session. Sixteen is the minimum age.
How to put the afternoon together
The sequence that makes sense on a grey day: beach first, then the sauna, then something hot in the village. Fenit has a shop, a couple of pubs and food by the harbour, and The Oyster Tavern at The Spa is ten minutes back along the Tralee road. If the wind is up, the same afternoon works in reverse, with the sauna first and the walk afterwards when the rain passes. For a first visit to this part of County Kerry, the beach, the Greenway and the sauna are the three things to do in Fenit that people come back for.
